When you look out into your backyard, what do you see? Is it a place of potential, or is it a patch of uneven terrain that limits your ability to fully enjoy your outdoor space? For one client in Streetsville, Mississauga, their sloped backyard was more of a burden than a blessing. But with the right planning and a little creativity, we transformed that challenging slope into an entertaining oasis, ideal for family gatherings and relaxation. Let’s dive into how we did it and how you can achieve similar results in your own backyard!

A Two-Month Design Process, 13 Days to Complete

Landscaping projects often require time, and this one was no diJerent. Over the course of two months, we worked hand-in-hand with the client to carefully craft a detailed design that would address both functional needs and aesthetic desires. It’s crucial to understand that landscaping projects are a marathon, not a sprint. Budgets, schedules, and personal preferences all play a role in shaping the project timeline.

Once the design was finalized, we dove into the actual work, which took 13 days to complete. The goal was to bring the design to life eJiciently, while ensuring every element was executed with precision and care.

Retaining Wall: The Backbone of the Backyard

A major challenge was the steep slope that limited the yard’s usability. To tackle this, we began with a retaining wall, a vital element that would not only level out the area but also provide stability to the backyard.

We built a 3-foot-high retaining wall, which involved digging 2 feet below ground to ensure a strong foundation. This was no simple task—it required precision and care to ensure the structure would stand the test of time. After constructing the wall, we installed a drainage system behind it to prevent future shifting caused by soil movement. Once the wall was in place and fully drained, we backfilled the area with premium topsoil to ensure proper grading and smooth contours for a perfect backyard layout.

Interlock Installation: Durability Meets Aesthetics

Next up, we tackled the hardscaping. The client wanted a functional yet stylish outdoor living area. We chose Shale Grey Techo Bloc interlock paving stones for the patio. This was

a smart choice—durable, aesthetically pleasing, and versatile enough to complement various home styles.

The crew followed ICPI standards (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) to ensure that the installation would be top-notch and long-lasting. The use of Onyx Black natural stone steps from Banas seamlessly complemented the interlock design, adding elegance to the space. These steps didn’t just look good—they served a practical function, leading to various sections of the yard while tying the design together.

We didn’t stop there. Concrete edging around the patio ensures the interlock stays in place, helping to prevent shifting as time goes on. The result? A solid, beautiful patio area that serves as the heart of the backyard.

Sprinkler System: Automated System

With the hardscaping in place, it was time to address the watering needs of the backyard. A full front and back sprinkler system was installed, complete with an automated feature that can be controlled through a phone app. This modern solution ensures the lawn and plants get the right amount of water, without the hassle of manual watering. Plus, the homeowner can control it from anywhere—whether at work or on vacation—making it the ultimate in convenience.

Planting: Two Areas, One Beautiful Space

The client wanted two distinct planting zones: one for aesthetic beauty, and another for practical gardening.

The aesthetic planting area is where we added Japanese Maples, Hicks Yews, and other perennials. These plants add color and interest to the backyard year-round, transforming the space into a beautiful landscape that constantly evolves with the seasons.

On the other side, we installed a wooden raised planter designed specifically for growing vegetables such as tomatoes, along with green herbs. Raised planters make gardening more accessible and eJicient, providing the perfect environment for growing fresh produce right at home.

Sod Installation: A Lush, Green Lawn

After the hardscaping and planting were in place, it was time for the sod installation. We brought in 25 yards of premium topsoil, carefully grading the area to ensure a healthy water flow. Once that was complete, we laid Kentucky Blue Grass from Green Horizons— an ideal choice for semi-sunny areas like this backyard. Not only is it a hardy, low-

maintenance option, but it also thrives in this environment, providing a lush, green lawn that’s perfect for both relaxation and play.

Final Results: A Backyard to Enjoy for Years to Come

The transformation is nothing short of remarkable. What once was an uneven, sloped, and underused backyard is now a stunning, functional outdoor living space. From the retaining wall to the interlock patio, the sprinkler system, and the lush greenery, every element was carefully chosen and executed to create a backyard that is both beautiful and practical.

The client can now host family and friends in a space that reflects their style and needs, and the low-maintenance features (such as the automated sprinkler system and premium sod) ensure that they can enjoy the space without constant upkeep.

Conclusion: The Power of Professional Landscaping

This project in Streetsville is a great example of how thoughtful landscaping can transform an entire backyard. From retaining walls and interlock paving to eNicient irrigation systems and strategic planting, each aspect of this renovation added value and functionality.
